4-H Day Suggested Attire

You want to present the best image possible for 4-H while you are the state capitol. After all, you are an important person and you are going to meet important people!

The legislators you will visit and their staff, will all be dressed professionally. Many of them will wear suits and ties. It's important that you be dressed neatly. Tuck in your shirt. Iron your clothes if you can (ask for a parent or 4-H agent's help if needed).

Suggested attire for boys - slacks, a collared shirt, belt, shoes.

Suggested attire for girls - slacks or a skirt, a blouse, shoes.

    • If possible, please try to wear green and white.
    • Wear a blazer if you have one and it matches what you are wearing.
    • T-shirts, shorts, cut-offs, ripped jeans, and flip-flops are not appropriate attire.
    • In a professional setting like the state capitol, clothing should be modest.
    • Please use your discretion and good judgment in determining what is appropriate.
    • If you have a question about what to wear, please talk to your parent, guardian, or 4-H agent.

You may want to bring a  camera and film with you, so you can take pictures to remember the day with. When visiting your state legislator, ask him/her to take a photograph with you. They will be delighted to do it!

Note about Security:

Security is taken very seriously at the state capitol. You will have to pass through a metal detector when you enter the new capitol building or any of the other house and senate office buildings. The more stuff you carry, the longer it will take you to get through security. Try to travel light.

All comments about security are taken seriously. Do not make jokes about terrorists, bombs, or other things that are inappropriate. The capitol security staff take all comments seriously.
