Betty Lou Glassburn

Betty Lou Glassburn started her 4-H career at Duette Elementary School when in 1974 she established “The Mighty 4-Hers of Duette.” She established the first fire department in Duette, and provided first aid and CPR classes for the community as a 4-H leader. She also coordinated the opening of the community’s library and the printing of the 4-H Duette Cookbook. Her 4-H club built and posted the “Welcome to Duette” sign on the highway and “Ms. Betty” is known throughout Florida for her commitment and involvement in 4-H.
Glassburn’s impact is not only felt in Florida but nationally as well. Her reputation as an enthusiastic participant in every aspect of 4-H has earned her the respect of youth and adults. She founded the State 4-H Leader Forum, sponsored a local bicycle safety rodeo, was a 4-H Camp Program Director, is a presenter at the Southern Region Leaders Forum at Rock Eagle, and is a 24 year member of the Manatee County 4-H Foundation.
Glassburn is instrumental in promoting community awareness of 4-H, individual involvement in community and volunteerism. “While raising three children as a single mom I feel that 4-H was the one positive I could count on to be constant. I have always tried to teach all children the importance of citizenship and community service. Do something for someone without asking anything back,” she said.
Glassburn said “I feel I have personally received tenfold back what I have given to the program. To be remembered by hundreds of youth and friends that I have met and known over the years in wonderful.”
