Entomology Project

In the 4-H Entomology projects, you will learn:

  • about ecological systems;
  • about biological principles of living organisms; and
  • skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, self-responsibility, planning and organizing, and improving your knowledge of general science and technology.

ENTOMOLOGY (For Youth Ages 8-18) 

These two series offer you the opportunity to learn about the fascinating world of insects and their arthropod relatives. Hands-on activities teach you valuable life skills using insects found in the soil, on plants, in homes, on pets and in other secret places.

ENTOMOLOGY - Level 1 (Ages 8-10)

  • Creepy Crawlies explores how to make an insect collection, where to look for insects and how to identify and classify insects as they practice the following life skills: learning to learn, critical thinking, and decision making. Available through National 4-H Council.
  • Getting Started in Entomology teaches members the parts of an insect, the names of some common insects, the life cycles of some insects, and where common insects can be found. You will also collect insects and learn a simple way to display them. In EDIS this publication is DLN 4H129.

ENTOMOLOGY - Level 2 (Ages 11-13)

  • What's Bugging You? teaches how to identify insets to order, design insects, complete an insect collection table, plan an insect collection trip, rear meal worms, explore insect legs and collect insects with an extractor. Available through National 4-H Council.  
  • Collecting & Identifying Insects teaches members about collecting insects and the proper ways to display them. You will also be able to keep records on your bug collections. 

ENTOMOLOGY - Level 3 (Ages 14-18)

  • Dragons, Houses & Other Flies teaches how to keep an insect journal, determine the effect of food on mealworm larvae production, test ant food preferences, conduct honey bee learning experiments, organize an insect club, use an insect key, plan a butterfly garden, and record insect observations. Available through National 4-H Council.  
  • Working With Insects teaches members about collecting insects and the proper ways to display them. You will also be able to keep records on your bug collections. In EDIS this publication is DLN 4H131.

ENTOMOLOGY Leader/Helper Guide

This Helper''s Guide for the Entomology Series will help you support youth in his or her efforts to set goals and complete activities, as well as providing resources for the member's to use in completing the series. Available through National 4-H Council.

Peak at Pests
This environmental education project book, for ages 8-13, discusses what is a "pest" and what is not. The project book also has activities related to Integrated Pest Management and why it is important to control pests.

Spray Away
This environmental education project book, for ages 8-13, provides activities that relate to pesticide use and the different types of pesticides. The project book also discusses proper guidelines to follow and how to dispose of pesticides properly.
