General Science and Technology Group Projects

In the 4-H Science and Technology projects, you will learn:

  • how to develop marketable and productive skills for work and
    family life in science and technology;
  • how to effectively communicate with others; and
  • skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, planning and organizing, and responsibility.

Choose From These Group Projects:

Project Materials - SCIENCE DISCOVERY
(For Youth Ages 8-10)

Through fun and challenging learn-by-doing activities youth will learn science skills as they explore whales, rocks, trees, weather and oceanography.

Member and Leader Manuals (Ages 8-10)
ST1 1           Science Discovery - I
ST1 2           Science Discovery - II

SCIENCE DISCOVERY - Level 1 (Ages 8-10)

  • Science Discovery Book I teaches 4-Hers about science skills as they explore whales, rocks and minerals, water quality, trees and recycling. Available through National 4-H Council.
  •  Science Discovery Book II teaches 4-Hers about oceanography, spiders, weather, trees and astronomy. Lesson plans include background information, a lesson outline, life skill objectives and evaluation instruments. Available through National 4-H Council.

SCIENCE DISCOVERY - Level 2 and Level 3
(Ages 11-18)

  • There is no project guide for this level.

Leader/Helper Guide

There is not a separate Helper's Guide for these activities; each of the above resources contains the adult resources to support these activities.

Project Materials - IN-TOUCH SCIENCE SERIES
(For Youth Ages 8-10)

This series helps youth learn more about the science behind textiles and nutrition. The program encourages participants to manipulate materials, test ideas and explore their interests. Ten experiential activities demonstrate the common science concepts between the two fields of study and help youth understand the science in their daily lives. Kit includes tactile examples. Produced by Cornell University

Member and Leader Manuals (Ages 8-10)

ST2 2            Fiber and Animals
ST2 3            Food and Fabrics
ST2 4            Plants and Engineering

IN-TOUCH SCIENCE - Level 1 (Ages 8-10)

  • Chemistry and Environment show children how each of five science concepts relates to chemicals and our environment. Session 1 introduces the concept of dispersion. Children disperse fat droplets in milk to create swirling colors. They then consider whether dispersion is desirable when cleaning up an oil spill. Available through Cornell University.
  • Fiber and Animals show children how each of five science concepts relates to fibers used for textiles and animals. Session 1 illustrates the importance of microstructures, small physical features that the eye can not see. Children work wool fibers into felt fabric and in the process discover that wool fibers have microscopic scales. They understand how the tiny barbules on feathers help the bird fly. Available through Cornell University.
  • Foods and Fabrics show children how each of five science concepts relates to the food they eat and the clothes they wear. Session 3 encourages children to be more curious about how water interacts with foods and fabrics. Children observe the different abilities of fabrics and fabric finishes to absorb or repel water. They also understand that water is a major component of food and how it moves in and out of plant foods. A packet of yarn and fabric samples is enclosed. Available through Cornell University.
  • Plants and Engineering show children how each of five science concepts relates to plant science and engineering. Session 1 examines protective materials and strategies. Children learn how plants protect themselves from drought, fire and insects. They explore engineering ideas as they construct containers to protect fragile or valuable items. Available through Cornell University.
